There are different ways to register for Self Assessment depending on whether you are self-employed (e.g. sole trader), not self-employed or registering a partner or partnership. In this blog post we’ll explain what needs done and how to do it.
The deadline to register for Self Assessment is the 5th of October, make sure you make this deadline or else you could be fined. You can send your tax return online any time before the deadline once you’ve registered.
This can be done on the government website, follow this link.
Registering when you’re self employed
If you’re a sole trader and have earned over £1000 before tax relief in the last tax year (6th of April to 5th of April) then you must register for Self Assessment.
You may also have to register if you are receiving any untaxed income, for example money from renting out a property.
You will need to register for both Self Assessment and Class 2 National Insurance.
First time registering for Self Assessment?
For Self Assessment tax and Class 2 National Insurance, register through your business tax account. You will need to use a Government Gateway User ID and password to sign in, if you don’t have one you must register.
In 10 working days you will receive your Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) by post. You will receive it sooner in your personal tax account or on the HMRC app.
Already registered?
If you’ve already registered and did not send a return last year you will receive a reminder email or letter that tells you to complete one before it’s due.
You must register online using form CWF1 for Self Assessment and Class 2 National insurance. You will need the 10- digit Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) from when you originally registered. If you do not know your UTR you can find it what it is here.
Can’t register online?
You can register for Self Assessment and Class 2 national insurance by completing the online form and printing and posting to HMRC. Make sure you have all of your information ready as you can’t save an incomplete form!
You will receive a letter with your Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) within 10 working days or 21 days if you’re abroad.
Registering if you're a partner or partnership
If you’re a partner or partnership, then you must register for Self Assessment by 5 October. You will be required to provide your partnership’s 10-digit Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR). If you’re the ‘nominated partner’ you must also register your partnership which can be done here.
The different ways in which you can register are:
For limited liability partnerships (LLP)
